Five Cheers for Simone Goes to the Market! I am certain that Gandhi was right--that if we are to change the world, we must start with the children. I have witnessed myself the trickle up effect, when our students motivate their families to be respectful of wildlife, learn about our earth, and work to conserve energy. This book is another powerful tool, to help children and the rest of our community to pay close attention to our food and its sources. Its message is so timeless and timely--we are all connected by the food we share.

American kids need to be reintroduced to a fact that most of the rest of the world still knows: food can come from your neighbors. In fact, entering an age of increasing upheaval and uncertainty, that's about as good a gift as you can give your kid. And this charming book does the trick, elegantly and with great compassion. |

My daughter is locally grown and even now – at not quite four – she knows her farmers. She knows she’s lucky to be born in July because that’s when raspberries are ripe. I want her to know what being from a place means and to be proud of what’s special about Whatcom County. Connecting kids to their food, not to mention the variety of food colors that help them thrive just couldn’t be any more important today. But connecting to the people behind that food, to local friends and neighbors, that’s what gives life joy. Michelle Long, Executive Director, Sustainable Connections www.SustainableConnections.org |

Children need rich connection with nature for their physical and psychological wellbeing. But how to engender in a natural world that we’re destroying so readily? One answer is by the foods we eat. Another is by the stories we tell. Simone Goes to the Market helps connect children and nature. Snuggle with your young child, and delight together in the vibrant images, simple words, and humanistic vision of our future. Peter H. Kahn, Jr., author of Children and Nature http://faculty.washington.edu/pkahn/ |

When we see food, we east with our eyes first. Our bodies instinctively say Yes or No. And people remember the face and the hands that provide the food they eat. Last summer David and Simone became one of my CSA members. When they came to the Market to pick up their share, they would graciously thank me, peer into the box of colorful produce, and give me smiles. Their book is a fantastic celebration of color, food, and face! Gretchen Norman, Owner, Holistic Homestead www.holistichomestead.net |
